She has put out her hand to strong things • Proverbs 31:10-31

A century ago, on 21 January 1920, Dr Mary Glowrey began her journey from Port Melbourne to Guntur, India on the Orsova.

In Guntur Mary joined the Society of Jesus Mary Joseph and took the religious name Sr Mary of the Sacred Heart JMJ. Following her Novitiate she became a pioneering Sister-doctor, treating countless patients and establishing facilities, networks and training systems that continue to benefit millions today in India.

After her arrival in India, Mary told her family that 21 January marked the first day of the special annual Novena in honour of St Joseph that was prayed in all of the convents in India of the Society of Jesus Mary Joseph.
